TOURIST INFORMATION
Vivacious and energetic, Glasgow enjoys a year-round buzzing atmosphere
that visitors just love to experience. This is reflected in the city's performing
arts scene. Over 200 arts organisations, including Scottish Ballet and Scottish
Opera, are based in Glasgow, creating cutting-edge stage and theatrical
productions that led to the city being crowned as a European City of Culture.
Glasgow was also nominated UK's City of Architecture and Design in 1999
and its award -winning architecture is certainly an attraction in its own
right. Central Glasgow's Manhattan-style Loft Apartments and Commercial
Buildings afford awesome vistas of the city's impressive array of Victorian
and Edwardian buildings, dotted with hidden treasures from the medieval
period to the present day. But it's Glasgow's stunning 'Art Nouveau' architecture
for which the city is world-renowned. It would be sacrilege to ignore the
work of Glasgow's most celebrated sons, architect and designer Charles Rennie
Mackintosh.
Some of Scotland's most picturesque scenery surrounds Glasgow, from the
verdant rolling hills of the Clyde Valley to the beautiful walking country
of East Dunbartonshire that borders Loch Lomond and Trossachs National Park.
Should you want to venture that bit further from the city, you will be impressed
by the towns and villages in the Greater Glasgow and Clyde area such as
Paisley, Hamilton, Biggar, Balloch, Gourock and not forgetting the breathtaking
New Lanark World Heritage Site. They all make great day excursions from
the city and offer a plethora of attractions and leisure activities to visitors,
from ecclesiastical gems such as Paisley Abbey to spectacular boat trips
from Balloch.
